History has been made as the Federal High Court, Abuja ruled in favour of the demand for 35% Affirmative Action for Nigerian women in politics.
This has come following weeks of protests at the National Assembly by women’s groups led by Nimisire Emitomo and Chioma Agwuegbo.
The protests which were galvanised under the hashtag #NigerianWomenOccupyNass spoke against the rejection of five pro women bills by Nigerian lawmakers. The demand for 35% percent affimative action was a part of those bills.
However, after agitations from the women of #WomenOccupyNass, the Federal High Court, Abuja on Wednesday 6th April 2022 ruled in favour of that bill.
Document Women had earlier reported at the start of the protests and also subsequently reported the decision of the Nigerian Senate to reconsider three of the rejected bills.
The latter reconsideration came on International Women’s Day.
What remains are for all remaining bills to be passed by the National Assembly and for the 35% percent affirmative action quota to be actively implemented by the Federal Government in politics.
