Deborah Samuel, a student at the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, was beaten and burnt to death by fellow students on Thursday. This happened after accusations of blasphemy against Islam were made upon her.
According to a report by TSB News, Ms. Samuel had criticised some posts about Islam made by some other students on the general WhatsApp student platform.
Her responses to these posts angered some students and led to her being burnt to death.
Although the school authorities tried protecting the deceased with security personnel, the students overpowered the security officers and forced her out of the security room where she had been hiding. She was not only killed, but the building which had hid her, was burnt as well.
In a viral video on social media, the deceased was seen lying on the ground as she was beaten and stoned with planks; after which she was surrounded by young men who set tires on her and proceeded to burn her to death.
Commenting on the incident, the Sokoto police spokesperson Sanusi Abubukar said that two students have been arrested already.
He also said that an investigation directed by Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal is underway.
According to a report by Cable NG, the Sultan of Sokoto condemned the killing and urged the public to remain calm and strive for peaceful co-existence in the state.
In a report by People’s Gazette, Amnesty International condemned her murder and asked for immediate justice for her.
Another report by Sahara Reporters said that Nigerians online are currently signing a petition aimed at seeking justice for the late Deborah Samuel.
Authorities have also closed the school indefinitely so as to calm fears of counter attacks
